Efficiency and effectiveness are not the same. Someone who works hard and is well organised but spends all their time on unimportant tasks may be efficient but not effective. To be effective, you need to decide what tasks are urgent and important and to focus on these. This is called prioritising. It's important to list the tasks you have and to sort these in order of priority, and then to devote most time to the most important tasks. This avoids the natural tendency to concentrate on the simple, easy tasks and to allow too many interruptions to your work.

Flamholtz uses definitions of the objective and purpose ofmanagerial accounting given in 1966 by a committee of the American AccountingAssociation to show how little progress managerial accounting has made inachieving its intended goals. The objective of the accounting function is the"measurement and communication of data revealing past, present andperspective socioeconomic activities. The purpose is "to improve controlmethods and decision making at all levels of socioeconomic activities."Flamholtz notes that some people would even challenge the ability of managerialaccounting to achieve this objective and purpose. He also notes that theaccounting function has rarely played a decisive role in the management oforganizations and is not central to the operations of many businesses. According toFlamholtz, people in practice rarely see accounting as a useful managerial tool. As mentioned before he blames this lost relevance inpart on academic accountants. He also believes that practicing accountants andmanagers themselves bear significant responsibility. Managers should demand theinformation they need from the accounting function. The bottom line foraccounting, according to Flamholtz, is that managers of smaller entrepreneurialorganizations are not as sophisticated as professional mangers of the largerenterprises and they do not consider managerial accounting as having significantvalue.
